How a bounced check can affect you

Most of the time people underestimate the impact that a bounced check can have on their life. Do not believe that bounced checks will only give you some embarrassment and that's all. For the majority of people a bounced check is nothing more than an error and that they will be able to move on without any problem. Unfortunately this is not always true and there are some problems that you may face because of a bounced check. In this article we will be investigating the impact of a bounced check upon your life.

Firstly bounced checks can have some financial cost associated with it. Commercial banks will charge a penalty fee for each of your bounced check. Naturally the penalty fee will go up if another of your check bounces. On average the penalty charges is around $27. There is also the possibility that you will be incurring legal cost because your creditor will be beginning legal procedures against you. This is justifiable because you will have already enjoyed the product or the services without paying. In some cases these procedures can be very costly because you will not only need to pay for an additional charge but sometimes you will be required to pay the legal cost for the procedures as well.

Your credit ratings can also be affected with bounced checks. All clients' information is stored in a database and it is easy to monitor clients' banking behavior all across the country. Banks in the US use the ChexSystems to monitor clients' activity and to identify potential undesirable clients. The problem with such systems is that once you issue a bounced check the information is kept for a period of five years thus affecting your credit ratings for such a long period.

Another thing that you should not neglect with a bounced check is that people will lose trust in you. For instance your landlord may no longer accept your checks and may require payment in cash. Indeed this can be a major problem if you do not have any other alternatives than to deal with the person concerned. If you have a bounced check once in a while it should not be a major problem but if you have it regularly then you are in for some trouble. A little organization and discipline to reconcile your checkbooks and bank statement can go a long way in avoiding bounced checks.
